Can't See The Forrest For The Trees

About This Site

This site is a test bed for learning ExpressionEngine. I have never been a coder, so this will be an uphill process as I try to learn how to build a CMS based website. If you happen on this site, there is a chance it will make no sense. If you are an ExpresionEngine expert and want to help an old redneck become a nerd, jump right in.

Prostate Cancer

Well I do not really use this web site for much, I thought I would just dust the cobwebs off and try to keep a little history of my cancer journey.
I am the type that does not like to go to the Doctor unless I am sick and need some Rx to keep me going.  So now that I am getting older and see some of my
friends and how things have started to catch up with them, I thought it might be time to get my self checked out.
Well it has not started out as I had planned.  I really only wanted to an appointment for a colonoscopy as I wanted to make sure I am not getting old and let colon
cancer sneak up on me.  So when I go in after having done some lab work and stress test beforehand, I find out that item # 1 is that hypertension has set in and will now be on blood pressure Rx for the time being.  I have plans to do whatever it takes in getting back my health and not be dependent on Rx for BP.  So that I was prepared for and willing to get myself going after having let things go for awhile.  The shock came when he stated my PSA was 8 and was going to check my prostate for signs of cancer.  The next thing I know, the nurse ask if I have time to see the Urologist, then he is confirming by DRE that I have a lesion on the left prostate and schedules a biopsy for the next week to confirm the cancer.

Well that gets me going for the next couple of days looking into possible treatments for this cancer.  I did not like anything I read, plus did not like the idea of a biopsy, so now the first thing I am trying to find out, is how to get the cancer finding without the biopsy.  I have also found what I believe to the best way to go in treating the prostate cancer.  From all that I have read, the use of proton beam to kill the cancer cells, seems to offer good kill rates and high survivability % for 10 or more years.

So now that I have gotten this far, I will spend tomorrow trying to get some answers from the cancer centers that I would like to get the proton treatment from.  I know that no one likes to hear the words…. you have cancer.  I have not heard them yet, but I am sure they will come.  I have a long road ahead and at this time nothing has sunk in, the one thing that did bother me was reading about all the terrible side effects of all the normal treatment methods.  I knew that I did not want to go that route and searched and searched until I finally found what looks to be a real method that works without quality of life problems.  Being 53 years old with plans to live many more, it was very important to me to have a good life after treatment, not just some chance of cancer killed with a high chance of bad quality of life.

So, I will try to keep some information coming on a regular basis, more for me than anything.  I do not have any expectation of this being read by others or that you find some value from it.

Day One

Where do I start? I have been a computer user for many years, that is to say I use them not code for them.  Now as I get too old to learn new tricks, here I am trying to learn ExpressionEngine.  I downloaded the free core over a month ago and found this free webhost.  I decided to load ExpressionEngine on this free site, and then for several weeks I would just upload new versions of the software but never use it because I did not know where to start.

This site uses a downloaded template, so not only did I not design it, I did not know how to just jump in and start making it mine.  I can say that if I were able to design a site page it would look way different, but since that is most likely months down the road I will work with what I’ve got. The main purpose of this site will be a place of testing the skills I learn.  I have a very busy work schedule which does not leave much time to learn something totally new, so it will be hit and miss to progress very fast.

I am an avid Mac user, having used a Mac since 1986.  I have always loved the way Apple has made quality hardware and software.  Now I find myself trying to acquire and learn several new software applications for building an EE website.  From what I have read and observed from others, it looks like I will be using Coda from Panic and ExpresionEngine for the CMS to build a dynamic website.  EE 2.0 has been announced for release sometime this summer, so that has spurred me into action.  I would like to learn my way around by the time it is released.

It was also announced EE 2.0 will be built on CodeIgniter, their own php Framework.  Again this is another coding platform for which I am clueless.  So here I am, needing to learn XHTML, CSS, EE and php.
It is also an understatement that I am not a web designer.  Just that fact alone makes this process seem so huge a climb.  If you happen on this site, please be kind.
